Education Services Division

Summary of Intern Responsibilities

The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF), through it's Education Services Division, offers a wide variety of unique and innovative outreach efforts in the area of cardiovascular disease prevention and health promotion. The diversity of our programs ensures valuable opportunities for students to learn and further develop and refine a wide variety of professional skills in the area of health education.

Individual student responsibilities will vary depending on their background, interests and university requirements. Following a structured orientation, all students must draft and submit formal goals and objectives for their experience. As part of this process, each student must also identify and complete one major project within the semester.

Examples of specific internship responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Become familiarized with all activities and general operations of the MHIF Education Services Division and provide support as necessary and directed
  • Assist in the program planning and evaluation process through direct involvement in staff meetings, project planning committees and other discussions
  • Assist in the planning and coordination of special events
  • Counsel individuals on various heart health topics in an effort to assist them in successful lifestyle/behavior change
  • Assist in the administration of on-site health screening programs for corporate and community groups
  • Facilitate lesson plans/activities for children through an established and award-winning interactive school-based cardiovascular health education program
  • Participate in facilitator training program and instruct one or more community readiness-centered smoking cessation programs
  • Design and develop topic-specific health education brochures for use in new and/or existing health education programs/classes
  • Facilitate one-on-one risk factor counseling sessions through the use/administration of interactive educational displays and/or computer-based risk assessments within various community/corporate education settings and among diverse audiences
  • Attend grant-writing seminar and assist in researching and writing a grant proposal for submittal to an identified funding source
  • Present heart health education topics to one or more corporate and/or community groups through the MHIF Community Speakers Bureau
  • Write one or more newsletter articles for possible publication on the MHIF web site, in newsletters and/or other sources
  • Provide support in the coordination of scheduled medical conferences/ workshops
  • Participate in all scheduled Education Services Division activities/events and satisfy other duties as assigned by site supervisor
