Welcome to the Smoking Cessation Resource Directory
Thank you for visiting the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation web site and our Smoking Cessation Resource Directory.
As you are probably aware, Smoking is recognized as the single greatest preventable cause of death in the United States, causing more than 440,000 deaths each year, and tops the list of major risk factors associated with the development of heart disease. In Minnesota, the self-reported smoking rate is approximately 20%, or 1 in 5 residents, and it is critical that we provide information, support and assistance to those individuals who want to quit.
The Smoking Cessation Resource Directory was originally developed in 1993 by Kevin Graham, MD, Director of Preventive Cardiology at the Minneapolis Heart Institute with support from the Foundation. Since its introduction, the directory has established itself as the most comprehensive listing of smoking cessation programs, services and support resources within Minnesota. After 10 years and many enhancements and revisions, the intent and purpose of the directory has not changed--to provide individuals and health professionals with information on current smoking cessation resources available both locally and nationally.
The Directory is now updated biannually at which time each entry is reviewed and approved for completeness and accuracy by the identified provider. We thank these organizations, not only for their contributions to the directory and assistance in the revision process, but also for their steadfast commitment to supporting smoker’s in their cessation efforts. Also, over the past ten years, we have heard from a number of individuals with ideas for further enhancing this tool. We thank each of you for your thoughtful comments and contributions. The strength and potential of the directory is greatly dependent on this sharing of ideas and continuous input.
Recognizing that successful ex-smokers have utilized both traditional and non-traditional approaches in the quitting process, the directory provides information on a number of strategies and options for cessation. These include, but are not limited to, group cessation classes, support groups, face-to-face counseling, telephone/web-based interventions, residential programs and others. Individual strategies for cessation will vary depending on the program.
We sincerely hope you find this resource helpful. Please contact us at educ@mplsheart.org or by telephone at (612) 863-3979/toll-free at 877-800-2729 with any questions or recommendations for further enhancing the Smoking Cessation Resource Directory.
Please note that inclusion in the Directory does not constitute an endorsement on the part of the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation.
