Education:  Health and Wellness Programs Internship

Overview

The internship program at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) is designed to give the student a professional experience in his/her major area.  Internship opportunities are full-time and are available during the winter/spring (January-May), summer (May-August) and fall (September-December). Winter/spring and fall internships are typically 15 weeks and summer internships 12 weeks. The term of the internship can be modified to satisfy university requirements or increase credit value.

Eligibility

Eligible students will be final semester/quarter undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an accredited health-related degree program with a significant interest in and dedication to primary prevention. Specific disciplines may include, but are not limited to, public health, health education, exercise science, nutrition and behavioral psychology.

Application/Selection Process

Any interested student/prospective intern should submit a Letter of Interest and an updated resume to info@mhif.org. All required application materials must be received on or before the defined application deadline dates. These dates have been established as follows:

                  Spring (January-May).................... October 1

                  Summer (May-August).................. March 15

                  Fall (September-December)........... June 1

Following the application deadline, a program representative will contact you to review your materials/credentials and, if appropriate, arrange a personal interview.  Interviews will be conducted to select the most qualified and suitable candidate(s) and will be performed in-person or by phone depending on the availability of the student. Selection will be made based on the students’ background and experiences, communication skills, professional interests and enthusiasm, and on the projected needs and scheduled activities of the organization/division during the defined internship period.

The student intern will report to the Manager of Health and Wellness Programs and will maintain ongoing communication with this staff member through scheduled weekly meetings. The intern is expected to work up to 40 hours per week; hours may vary. 

Summary of Intern Responsibilities

The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF), through it's Education Services Division, offers a wide variety of unique and innovative outreach efforts in the area of cardiovascular disease prevention and health promotion. The diversity of our programs ensures valuable opportunities for students to learn and further develop and refine a wide variety of professional skills in the area of health education.

Individual student responsibilities will vary depending on their background, interests and university requirements.  Examples of specific internship responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Become familiarized with all activities and general operations of the MHIF Education Services Division and provide support as necessary and directed

  • Assist in the program planning and evaluation process through direct involvement in staff meetings, project planning committees and other discussions

  • Assist in the planning and coordination of special events

  • Counsel individuals on various heart health topics in an effort to assist them in successful lifestyle/behavior change

  • Assist in the administration of on-site health screening programs for corporate and community groups

  • Facilitate one-on-one risk factor counseling sessions through the use/administration of interactive educational displays and/or computer-based risk assessments within various community/corporate education settings and among diverse audiences

  • Design and develop topic-specific health education brochures for use in new and/or existing health education programs/classes

  • Assist in researching and writing a grant proposal for submittal to an identified funding source

  • Present heart health education topics to one or more corporate and/or community groups through the MHIF Community Speakers Bureau

  • Write one or more newsletter articles for possible publication on the MHIF web site, in newsletters and/or other sources

  • Provide support in the coordination of scheduled medical conferences/ workshops

  • Participate in all scheduled Education Services Division activities/events and satisfy other duties as assigned by the Manager of Health and Wellness Programs.
