Health Education Internship
Health and Wellness Program – Internship
At the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) the goal of our community outreach is to increase personal awareness of risk factors and provide the tools necessary to assist individuals in their pursuit of heart-healthy lifestyles. As part of its mission, the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation offers a variety of on-going programs designed to help individuals and communities maintain a healthy lifestyle and improve their heart health risk profile. Health and Wellness Education Interns have an opportunity to be part of this work.
The internship program is designed to give the student a professional experience in the fields of Health Education and Health Promotion.
Eligibility
Eligible students will be final semester/quarter undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an accredited health-related degree program with a significant interest in and dedication to primary prevention. Specific disciplines may include, but are not limited to, public health, health education, exercise science, nutrition and behavioral psychology.
Dates
MHIF offers an internship in the Summer, Spring and Fall semesters each year. Applications will be reviewed based on the following timelines:
Summer Internship:
Applications due March 1
Applicants notified early April
Internship runs May-August
Fall Internship:
Applications due June 1
Applicants notified early July
Internship runs August/September-December
Spring Internship:
Applications due October 15
Applicants notified early November
Internship runs January-May
The intern is expected to work up to 40 hours per week; hours may vary and may include evenings and weekends. The term of the internship can be modified to satisfy university requirements.
Summary of Intern Responsibilities
- The student intern will report to the Manager of Health and Wellness Programs. The intern will split their time working with both the Community Education department and the Heart of New Ulm project team. Individual student responsibilities will vary depending on their background. Examples of specific internship responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Become familiarized with all activities and general operations of the MHIF Education Services Division and provide support as necessary.
- Participate in the planning and implementation of cardiovascular health and wellness programs, presentations, health screenings and health fair events.
- Create articles or health education tools for possible publication on the MHIF web site, in newsletters and/or other sources.
- Create electronic communications, which may include e-blasts, website content, and surveys.
- Assist in conducting literature reviews and writing of scientific articles.
- Assist in the program planning and evaluation process through direct involvement in staff meetings, project planning committees and other discussions.
- Assist with locating grant opportunities and drafting grant applications.
- Participate in all scheduled Education Services Division activities/events and satisfy other duties as assigned by the Manager of Health and Wellness Programs.
Interns are expected to have basic skills necessary to complete these tasks, however, training will be provided on tasks that may not have been covered through coursework, such as the use of specific software programs.
Compensation
The intern will be provided a stipend of $1500. The stipend will be paid in three $500 installments during the course of the internship.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter that includes availability and a current resume to info@mhif.org. All required application materials must be received on or before the due dates mentioned above.
Following the application deadline, a program representative may contact you to review your materials/credentials and, if appropriate, arrange a personal interview. Interviews will be conducted to select the most qualified and suitable candidate(s) and will be performed in-person or by phone depending on the availability of the student. Selection will be made based on the students’ background and experiences, communication skills, professional interests and enthusiasm, and on the projected needs and scheduled activities of the organization/division during the defined internship period.
