During the year 2001, MHIF’s mission to improve heart health advanced
significantly through our clinical research efforts, which included more than 65
ongoing heart research studies. For example, MHIF participated in exciting and
groundbreaking research involving the area of drug-eluting stents. Preliminary
results showed no re-narrowing of the coronary arteries following balloon
angioplasty at the eight-month interval. This represents a fundamental change;
restenosis has been a major limitation in the treatment of coronary artery
disease, and the drug-eluting stent may become a major new tool for preventing
it. In order to continue to strengthen and grow MHIF’s research commitment, Dr.
Tim Henry joined the Foundation as the new Research Director along with five
very experienced research nurse clinicians. Dr. Henry formerly served as
Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Interventional Cardiology at
Hennepin County Medical Center where he conducted dozens of clinical trials and
authored numerous papers. The future of MHIF promises more groundbreaking
research as we plan to expand into pre-clinical research with the addition of
Dr. Robert Schwartz. Dr. Schwartz, who had been Professor and Director of
Vascular Biology at Mayo Clinic, will join the Foundation in January 2002.
