Education Update: The Doctor Behind the Program

For the past 21 years, Dr. Dean Ornish has dedicated his life, through clinical research, to proving that comprehensive lifestyle and dietary changes often reverse even severe coronary heart disease without drugs or surgery. Dr. Ornish, the author of five best-selling books, is best known for the book, Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease, and has been featured in major medical and general media for his discoveries.

Dr. Ornish has appeared on the one-hour documentary show NOVA, a PBS science series that featured his research on healthy lifestyles. His work was also featured on Bill Moyers' PBS series Healing & the Mind, as well as on the cover the March 16, 1998 issue of Newsweek. Among the medical publications in which his research has been published are the Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet, Circulation, and the American Journal of Cardiology.

Dr. Ornish is the founder, president, and director of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute, Sausalito, California. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, as well as a founder of the Center for Integrative Medicine there. Dr. Ornish is listed in the Dictionary of International Biography, Who's Who in America, and Men of Achievement. He was recognized as one of the most interesting people of 1995 by People Magazine, and as one of the 50 most influential members of his generation by LIFE Magazine.
