Division of Indian Work-Community Nutrition Programs
The goal of the Horizons Unlimited Program-Community Food and Nutrition Program is to increase the nutritional knowledge of low income American Indians at risk for disease and unhealthy diet. Division program staff has developed a two-part nutrition education program for tribal elders. The first program was held on Friday, March 21st, 2003 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and featured topic presentations by a physician and a Medicine Woman and a site-prepared heart-healthy meal. MHIF provided education services including our interactive BMI (Body Mass Index) display and two dietitians to provide counseling and referral services. The second part of this program is scheduled for Tuesday, August 19th from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. and features an Elders Panel Presentation involving six speakers to include a Medicine Woman and local elders, a prepared meal and heart-health counseling. MHIF has committed cash support in the amount of $550 to cover costs of speaker honoraria and a cook, and counseling services utilizing the HeartFair interactive educational display and two health educators.
Intertribal Health Committee-American Indian Wellness Fair
The Intertribal Health Committee sponsored the Eighth Annual American Indian Wellness Fair on Wednesday, April 30th, 2003 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Minneapolis American Indian Center. The goal of the event was to provide a variety of free screenings and increase personal awareness of risk factors by providing the tools necessary to assist in promoting health and preventing disease. The Committee requested support for non-fasting cholesterol screenings, an interactive display to include counseling services and photography services.
Anderson Schools-Health and Wellness Physical Education Center
In October 2003, Anderson Schools (Anderson Open and Anderson Elementary) received a Leadership in Fitness Training (L.I.F.T.) grant from the National School Fitness Foundation in the form of equipment, software and other services valued at $225,000. These resources were received, and the equipment installed, in December 2003 into a dedicated 2000 square foot space. Prior to accepting the grant, the schools were required to facilitate and support the costs of space preparation to include the installation of new flooring and the completion of necessary electrical work at an estimated cost of $6000. MHIF provided cash support in the amount of $6000 to support these required costs.
Community Fitness Today-Aerobic Class Appreciation Week
Community Fitness Today (CFT) is a Minneapolis-based non-profit organization established to improve the health status of African Americans and other minorities through educational fitness, nutrition and prevention programs. A significant part of their programming includes an extensive schedule of fitness classes offered at the Sabathani Center located in south Minneapolis. In an effort to recognize class participants and instructors of these classes, and promote fitness class offerings to the local communities, CFT is sponsored an “Aerobic Class Participant and Instructor Appreciation Week” Tuesday, December 2 through Friday, December 5, 2003. MHIF has committed cash in the amount of $1351 to support costs of program promotion and incentive awards, and service support through onsite blood pressure screening services and the BMI and HiTECH Heart displays. In addition, MHIF solicited and secured additional incentive awards from Be Active Minnesota valued at $500.
